Pasadena, CA — McDonald's is planning a huge one-day hiring spree, scheduled on April 19, to hire 50,000 new employees nationwide.

The positions offered include crew, both part-time and full-time, and managers. McDonald's currently has 14,000 restaurants and 650,000 employees. Jan Fields, president of McDonald's U.S.A. said that the average pay was going to be $8.30 an hour. Managers would be able to make $50,000 a year.

McDonald's is trying to improve the image of ''McJob'', a derogatory slang used for describing most jobs available at McDonald's. It is meant to imply that those jobs are low-paying, dead-end careers. But McDonald's has been highlighting for the past few years that several of its employees have risen through the ranks. Fields herself started out at an entry-level position in the company in 1978. Jim Norberg who works as senior vice president in McDonald's restaurant support office began working at age 16 at McDonald's. His job involved making french fries.

Summer time usually results in more sales for the company and the company has been hiring a similar number for the past few years. But the one-day recruiting event is the first time for McDonald's and is meant to show what an important part the company plays in the economy.

CEO of HospitalityCrossing A. Harrison Barnes says that this is a great opportunity for unemployed people of all ages and skills level. ''For people who are long-term unemployed and do not want a larger gap on their resume, a stint at such a job would be great.'' HospitalityCrossing, a job aggregator site has been tracking all the jobs in the food and leisure industry. The site has found 56,000 jobs in the sector.
