The position of a hotel manager is a very responsible position. A hotel manager handles the operations, conventions, housekeeping, food services, etc. All these responsibilities and essential daily decisions in a small hotel are taken by one manager. If the concern is big, then numerous managers are recruited to handle the responsibilities that are required in the hotel.

A hotel manager needs to perform varied job responsibilities. Daily reports are produced in every hotel where a brief description of all the activities of the last 24 hours in the hotel is mentioned. The hotel manager needs to review the daily report that also includes total earnings, daily budget, hotel statistics, customer requests, complaints, maintenance issues, etc.

A hotel manager also deals with proper staff management. He conducts a meeting with the staff along with the heads of various departments. The meetings take place in order to discuss and resolve the daily report issues. Not just the daily report issues, but there are discussions on other relevant topics apart also. The hotel manager distributes the work to the department heads and then the department heads allocate the work to their respective teams.

Do you want to obtain an excellent career in hotel management as a hotel manager? Well, for that you need to possess outstanding communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Apart from the skills, proper qualifications are also essential for this position. A college degree in restaurant management or hotel management is a must. Keep in mind that the department of food services puts in significantly to the earnings of a hotel and a successful restaurant manager can judge his/her career opportunities quickly.

Generally, the colleges that offer restaurant management or hotel management courses provide the benefit of work and study programs to the students. These programs give the students a chance to have the practical experience of working in hotels that will come as a great benefit when they join as a hotel manager.

After your college is over you should go through a training program of a hotel after being hired. In the initial years, you need to handle some routine responsibilities and not the hardcore responsibilities of a hotel manager such as hotel décor, conventions or staffing. Once your training period gets over, you might be offered positions like a front office manager, a convention services manager, a food and beverage manager, or any other administrative positions. Your success rate in the varied managerial positions will help you in the position of a hotel manager in the long run.

One important aspect of working as a hotel manager is relocating at different places. Suppose you work for a hotel chain that has branches in various parts. You might be posted in one branch for few years and then again you will be transferred to another location of the hotel chain.

On an average a hotel manager makes around $100-150K every year. It is not always wise to expect to start your career directly as a hotel manager. You have to work out your ways in the industry to reach the position.

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
